PICC line removal

My wife had a PICC line inserted while she was receiving chemtherapy. She has now had all further treatment stopped and is receiving care at home. She is chronically breathless and cannot travel anywhere. The hospital had "no one available to remove the PICC line" when she was disharged and NOBODY in our local area is prepared to do the job - not GP surgery or community nurse. We desperatley need a qualified nurse or doctor to come to our home and remove the PICC line but can find no-one to do it. We are prepared to pay if necessary. We live in West Sussex. Please can you help/advise.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am very sorry to hear about your wife's situation with regard to the removal of her PICC line.

I'm afraid we don't know if the nurses working for private agencies in your area are trained to remove PICC lines so are unable to recommend someone, but you could make your own enquiries. I found some agencies looking on the Yell.com website at this link

It may be worth asking the GP or community nursing service matron/manager to liaise with other communityor hospital based services to see whether they can help at all. I think you need to press them to find a solution for your wife, you may want to take raise a concern or make a complaint about what has happened.

I am not sure if your wife is under the care of a community based palliative care team. Palliative care teams include nurses and they specialise in controlling symptoms. If needed the GP should be able to refer your wife to one of these teams, I don't know if they would be able to remove the PICC line.

I am sorry not to be of more help. If you would like to ring and talk this through with one of us please do.  We are here Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All thevery best,

    Julia
