positive bowel screening test

I posted this in the pre diagnosis, signs and symptoms section but would like to post this here if a nurse can give some words of advice.

I'm 20 years old and female. Had acute lymphoblastic leukaemia age 2-4. Yearly checks afterwards were always normal thankfully. I haven't been poorly since I was 15.

I got a call from the drs a few weeks ago as someone in my family messaged them concerned about my weight.

I agreed to see the dr about my weight loss but that time, I didn't want to admit to myself (let alone the dr) that I've not been eating much on purpose and going on walks a lot more to lose weight even though I'm already underweight. I don't understand why I'm like this because I used to love food but I'm going to tell my dr next time about this.

I said that I have just lost my appetite and stressed (I feel guilty about lying, I know I should have just been honest). She weighed me, felt my tummy and listened to my chest and said she'll request a CT scan. She also asked me to give a stool sample and a bowel screening test. I didn't expect any of those to be abnormal.

My screening test is positive at 400 and my faecal calprotectin is slightly raised. I didn't expect those at all, especially since I didn't see blood when I did the test.

Now I've realised my weight has gone down very fast and it's probably not caused by just diet and exercise.

I've had a phone appointment today and she's booked a blood test for next Tuesday and then a face to face appointment to check height, weight and do rectal exam. I am so nervous!

Any advice?

  • Hello

I am sorry to read about everything that has been happening to you.  From the investigations the medical team are doing it looks like they are trying to cover all the possibilities just in case.  As you probably know the stool test, tests for blood rather than for cancer and you can have blood in your stools for a variety of reasons.  The calprotectin test is not used to diagnose cancer, it is used to distinguish between Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Inflamatory Bowel Disease.  So it looks like the doctors have not assumed that you have cancer, they are just trying to work out why you are loosing weight, and given your history of Leukaemia they are being especially careful to investigate you fully.

You ask in your post for any advice from us.  I think the best advice we can give is to be really clear with the doctors about your health issues including your diet and exercise patterns, but also not to jump to any conclusions about what might what be the cause of your weight loss.  Until they have looked into it properly for you there is no way of predicting the most likely cause, but  there really could be lots of explanations for it.

I appreciate it is very hard waiting for the results of tests, but try not to worry too much at this stage, it could turn out to be something that is easily treated.

    I hope that is helpful

    Martin
