Grey stools after a colonoscopy

Hi, are grey stools to be expected after a colonoscopy? It has been 4 days and the stools are grey (easy to pass). Also there is mild cramping. The nurse did not give me much information  so I have been left to wonder. Before the procedure there were no grey stools.

Ps: 3 polyps were removed

Thank you for any advice.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

It does take a week or so for your bowels to get back to normal after a colonoscopy. I can't say what the significance of the grey stools are but it may settle down in a few days time. If it does continue then do mention it to your GP.

The cramping that you are experiencing may be from where they took the biopsies but if this does continue then you could contact the endoscopy clinic and let them know.

We have some information on our website about what to expect after a colonoscopy which you can see here.

I hope that it all settles down soon.

If you would like to ring and chat with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are more then welcome to do so. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
