Cervix abnormal

I have had symptoms for a good few months now. I had blood test and a bowel cancer screening all came back normal but then I had a random call to have a PV exam because I had bleeding after sex, pain during sec abs in my lower abdomen along with feeling bloated. I had the exam and was told my cervix looks abnormal and she thinks it is a benign growth. I have been referred down the 2 week cancer pathway but been told not to worry as she doesn't think it is cancer but can't be 100% sure. I had my letter come through and it says to expect to be there for 2 hours. Just wondering what to expect. I spoke to a close friend who asked if they will do a biopsy but honestly I don't know what to expect and feeling anxious

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I am not completely sure what the specialist will do at the hospital  as individual specialists do things in different ways.  But it is very likely that they will take a full history (ask you questions about your health),and do a physical examination.

Depending on the assessment the doctor may order further tests and ask to see you again when the results are available. It may take a couple of weeks to get other tests organised. I don't think that it is common to get everything sorted in one visit. If they suggest a biopsy, it can take a couple of weeks to get the results.

You might find that the specialist is able to give you an opinion of what they think is the matter on the day, and there may be no need for further tests. But if they are unsure you may find that they are reluctant to say much at this first appointment. Please do not assume the worst if the specialist asks for more tests. This is quite common and it does not always mean that anything serious is wrong.

I hope you know more about your situation soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
