Help in deciphering the stages Thyroid Cancer

Hi I have recently been diagnosed with follicular thyroid carcinoma . I asked for a copy of the letter sent from the hospital to the doctor and have received it but there's bits that I don't understand so was hoping someone could shed some light.

It says that it is T2 which I gather means stage 2 but it then says V1. R1 and I don't know what that means does any one else?

Thank you

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

We have information on our website which explains the stages of follicular cancer which you can see here

I am not a pathologist but what I understand is that V1 relates to the actual location of specific lymph nodes in your neck when they were dissected, and the R1 is related to the actual surgery itself, and whether there is a possibility of microscopic residual tumour after surgery.

Do talk to your doctors about this and what this means for you in terms of follow up care moving forward.

You may also find it helpful to look at the information by The Follicular Lymphoma Foundation which you can see here

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,
