Neck lumps

A couple of months ago I found a little lump at the base of my neck near my collar bone I got looked at and it was fine it was getting bigger so went back where they felt and referred me for the 2ww at head and neck. The specialist found more than what I was feeling and sent for a ultrasound. It's been more than 3 weeks and got a face to face appointment at the hospital for the result in a week. If it was anything serious would I of needed to be told sooner or not?

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you are having investigations for your neck lump. I am afraid it is impossible to say what the doctor is going to say when they see you.

I can understand that waiting for your appointment can be unsettling. I am not sure whether you had a biopsy when you had the ultrasound but they may be waiting to also process this result before you come back for your appointment but of course I can't be sure. They may also have not physically be able to fit you in any sooner due to the numbers of patients that doctors are seeing.

Swollen lymph glands are common and most will have other causes other then cancer but it is important to rule this out.

Try and keep yourself busy to take your mind off it all if you possibly can.

If at any stage you would like to ring and speak to one of the helpline nurses then you are more then welcome to do so.

We are here from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm  and the number is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the Very Best,

    Catherine
