Discomfort after partial nephrectomy

I had a partial nephrectomy on my left kidney just over 4 weeks ago.

I am encountering 'dicomfort' around my left flank below the ribs and above my hip bone (feels like a dull pain like a kidney punch). I have had bloods taken and urine samples which have ruled out a urine infection

I am also encountering a 'tingling' sensation in the abdomen, down into the left groin and in the left testicle.

I had very little information or advice following the surgery but none of the medical professionals I have spoken to seem concerned about any of these symptoms, and I wondered whether these sensations can be attributed with post operative discomfort, and how long I can expect these symptoms to continue for?

Thank you in advance

  • Hello and thanks for your post.

There are many tiny nerve endings all across our body, and it is common after surgery, for these to be irritated or damaged. Nerves can take up to two years to settle down. Your surgery is still relatively recent, so you do need to give it some more time for things to settle. Some minor scar tissue will be forming as well.

Try and keep active, and do gentle stretching exercises, and let your doctor know if these symptoms change.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Vanda

Thank you so very much for your message and clarifying the situation, TBH my head has been a bit of a mess wondering what it could be and why these symptoms have come on a couple of weeks after surgery.

It is re-assuring when someone takes the time to explain the concepts reagarding post-operative recovery and symptoms.

    Thank you.

    Best wishes
