cystitis from radiation

Hello everyone

Wonder if anyonce call help? I finished my 5 days a week by 5 weeks radiation on August 12rh. After approx 3 weeks of radiation, I started to suffer badly with this bladder cystitis..I am currently taking Oxycondone liquid and tablet form to try and alleviate the pain but it's still hanging around. I have read up about this and it would appear that it takes aprrox 3 months for any side effects to go away and there's nothing much more I can do except up the pain relief. Any ideas.

Sombody who has suffered with bladder problems all her life recommended me D-Mannose and swears by it. I'm assuming it's safe to take whilst being on chemo and taking other drugs??

Hope to hear back from you soon

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am very sorry to hear that you have cystitis following treatment for bladder cancer. I can appreciate you want to know what could help.

If your hospital cancer team don't know how this is affecting you then please let them know. They may suggest other ways to cope with this. Leave a message with your cancer nurse specialist about your situation.

I do not know if taking D-Mannose will help or be safe to take.  So, please check this out with your team.

Some people say that drinking cranberry juice helps, although if you are on blood thinning medication it can interact with it and affect how it works, so do not take it if you do.

Drink plenty, but you most probably do know this and are doing it.

Have you posted in another area on Cancer Chat , where more people will see your post?  This might generate replies from people that have been through this treatment. To the left of the page you can see the different areas.

You may also want to contact another charity called Bladder Cancer Action and ask if they have any useful advice for you, you can see their website here

I hope this has been of some help and that you begin to feel better soon.  Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
