2 separate biopsies same day

Hi everyone, sorry to start straight away with a question but I am a little worried, not telling anyone at home but can't help but wonder, I had a call back after the normal mammogram appointment, I was given an appointment straight away and had a mammogram and ultrasound, they showed me what they were worried about and then the ultrasound found something else so had 2 separate biopsies, same breast different sides, same day, anyway had a telephone call to say one is clear but waiting on the other but would like me to come in a couple of days later than arranged, now I'm wondering, should I be worried or is this quite normal for results to come back at different times? This has come as a complete shock because I had no idea anything would show up!

  • After my wife's op, 2 areas came back in time for her post op appointment, and one was still unavailable on that day. All 3 came back fine. Depends on what they are testing, if they have the capacity, or if one biopsy requires a different type of testing. Biopsies are usually done in batches according to her surgeon. So it's not uncommon for some results to be available before others.

  • Thank you so much, I think I am just winding myself up now because I don't want to talk and worry my family, but I'll take a deep breath and get myself calm again positive vibes!

  • Hi PoppyChain and thanks for posting.

It does sound like you are having a worrying time.

Waiting for results can be stressful and a lot of people contact us to ask how long should they have to wait for them to come through.

Biopsy results usually take 2 to 3 weeks. But biopsy waiting times in the NHS can vary depending on the workload and staffing in local laboratories.  We have heard from lots of people lately saying their results are taking much longer than this. It is possible for biopsies to come back at different times as they would be being looked at separately.

It sounds like the team who are looking after you would like you to come in later to make sure both the results are available.

There is no easy way to get through the waiting times, many people tell us that keeping busy and sticking to a routine can help a little. But until you know your results of course you will feel worried.

I hope this is helpful, but if you would like to talk it through with one of our nurses please get in touch on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take Care

    Rachel.
