Abnormal cells removed, smear 6 months later showing hpv pos

Hi,

Just wondering if someone can tell me what is going on or what to expect.

Ive had 2 smears both hpv pos (at first was hard to get my head around as ive had the same sexual partner for 15 years), 2nd one with abnormal cells so went and had them removed. Been for my follow up smear 6 months later. Got my results back today and cells are normal but hpv is still there!! surely this should have gone with the cells?

ive been asked to go back for another colposcopy, what will this be to look for now then? as there is no abnormal cells...

I just feel a bit confused. Anyone experienced the same? or a nurse around to explain why for me?

thank you in advance!

  • Hello and thanks for posting some questions here

As I am sure you are aware the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV is extremely common infection and there are hundreds of different strains. In most cases the body clears HPV within a couple of years of getting it but sometimes it can clear and then come back and in some people it can persist ( in other words never really go away).

The issue with HPV is some strains of it are high risk that sometimes cause abnormal cells to develop and this is what is mostly responsible for abnormal cells to develop in the cervix, so the cervical screening service now checks for HPV as the first test.

Unfortunately it is impossible to know when and where someone first came into contact with hpv and it is possible to pass it back and forth with a partner and to get more than one strain as well. We do also know that smoking can sometimes slow the body from clearing it.

The screening programme has very strict protocols that are followed by the colposcopy team. In your case you were treated for abnormal cells so then attended for follow up at 6 months ( called test of cure) that didn't show any abnormal cells but HPV is still present.

Whilst HPV can sometimes clear with the removal of the abnormal cells it doesn't always. Therefore it is part of the procedure to be seen in colposcopy again for a closer look to make sure the cervix is definitely clear and no abnormal cells are lingering behind that may need more treatment.

Try not to worry as this is very common thing to happen.  At your appointment the colposcopist will explain what they can see and what needs to happen there and in the future in terms of follow up for you.

I hope this helps but do get back if you have more questions, we also have our helpline on 0808 800 4040 Mon-Fri 9-5 you are welcome to call.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
