general symptoms

Hi,

I've been having sort of general symptoms since about June 2022 (swollen lymph nodes, fatigue, loss of appetite, cold sweats and heat flashes, low grade fevers consistently, breathlessness, nausea, dry cough, change in bowel habits, occasional severe night sweats, joint pain, all that have only gotten worse as times gone on). I have visited the GP, at the time they sent me for an urgent blood test and oncology assessment to see what steps to take next regarding my symptoms and swollen lymph nodes in my neck. My family has a history of Hodgkin's lymphoma so we were extra cautious. When I went to see the oncologist she brushed me off completely and barely checked me over then proceeded to blame it on stress and social media (which I don't even use). This really upset me as I felt like I was stupid and wasting her time and never got peace of mind at all.

By this time I had gotten my CBC results back and had slightly elevated platelets which have since gotten higher. I went back to my GP and told him about my experience which he was very kind about. He referred me to get a chest x-ray and a neck ultra sound. I had both done and was told I had many swollen lymph nodes but still just under the size to do a biopsy so nothing else was done.

Since then the symptoms have persisted and I've been noticing more and more swollen lymph nodes in my neck and current enlarged ones are growing at a granted, very steady pace but also consistent pace. Could this be anything slow growing yet still something to chase up on?

These are quite concerning and slowing me down in my studying a lot as I'm constantly incredibly tired and can't walk that much without being in pain. Doctors are barely doing anything and are blaming it all on my recurring ear infections which I've had since a child due to unrelated problems. I know it's not related to them as it is a completely different set of symptoms and obviously I know my own body.

What should I do about this? it's obviously been months since June and I'm worried as my dad who has had hodgkins twice had relatively abnormal symptoms too.

Any advice is appreciated.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about the difficult time that you are having. I can only imagine how immensely frustrating this must be for you.

I can also understand that when you have had a history of cancer (Hodgkin's) in the family it does make you more aware of your own symptoms.

Lymph nodes can go up and down particularly if you have had recent infections or are feeling run down. The gold standard for looking at lymph nodes is an ultrasound which can tell the doctors more about the lump. If there was an area that did look suspicious then they would have taken a biopsy.

I do know that some infections can persist for some time. I can only suggest that you try and rest and drink plenty of fluids over the next couple of weeks and then if things don't improve that you make an appointment with your GP or another GP in the practice who can see you with a fresh set of eyes.

I do hope that you feel better soon.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
