Indent in breast with pain

Hi everyone! I hope you are all well!

I was referred and seen by the breast clinic today for a significant dimple in my right breast. They performed an ultrasound of the right breast only, which was all clear, and the doctor told me that it was probably just the 'breast fat changing'. Relieved that there is nothing to worry about.

While I was there, I mentioned that I also had developed a significant finger-length indent in my left breast, that also came with pain that radiated into my armpit, and at times is so bad that I can't sleep, get comfortable, or even use the arm. The doctor dismissed this as being normal, and because I was only referred for concerns about my right breast, that he would not request an ultrasound for the left. When the radiologist (a doctor) saw the left side, she said that really it should be scanned also, but she cannot do it without a request.

Before I left, the doctor let me know that if I developed any further issues in the right side, I can rerefer myself for up to 6 months to be seen again without having to go via my GP. I asked again about the left side as it is something that is concerning me, I'm already on a high dose of anti-inflammatories and other pain relief for other issues and they do not seem to be helping, he simply told me again that it's normal and if I was worried I should go and see my GP.

I can't help but feel somewhat fobbed off? The pain in the left side, starts in the breast and then radiates, and the indent is more prominent whenever my arm tenses. He was able to see and feel it when he examined me. I plan on making contact with my GP, but who knows when I'll get an appointment.

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you went to the breast unit yesterday and haven't come away reassured as you had hoped.

The doctors are usually very skilled in these clinics and know the signs to look out for that need further investigating, so it is a shame they didn't agree to image both breasts whilst you were there.

I suggest as you have already said you will contact your GP again and ask if they can re refer you back to the breast unit for a scan of the other breast for your peace of mind.

As I am sure you are aware as we get older our breasts do tend to change and many of these are normal. Breast pain isn't strongly linked to cancer and is often the result of hormonal changes or a strained muscle or injury, or rib pain but I understand how this can be a worry especially when not responding to pain medication.

Talk to your GP when you can and see what they say.

    All the best

    Naomi
