Breathing issues after partial thyroidectomy

Hi, I had an op to remove a 5cm lump from my neck and chest (and half my thyroid) around 3.5 weeks ago. The lump was pushing into my windpipe and bent it quite out of shape which was why they removed it. The last week or so I've been experiencing sudden breathing difficulties - once I woke up at night and was coughing and struggling to get air in and I was making a strange noise trying to suck air in. The second time I was eating and the same thing happened, and the third time I was about to drink a fizzy drink, breathed in some of the fizzy vapour and it felt like my throat closed up and I was making the weird noise again trying to suck air in. If I force myself to relax and slow my breathing down it subsides but this one took a while and my vision started clouding a bit. I'm worried about going to the doctor in case they just say it's a panic attack. Which it might be I guess, though I was asleep when the first one happened. I've been given no info at all about what to expect from side effects so no idea if this is normal but it's starting to scare me a bit.

  • This is exactly what I am going through now.

Had a total thyroidectomy 5 weeks ago and on routine blood test mentioned I was getting breathless so doc did bloods to check for infection or blood clot. Markers came back high so ended up in hosp for 3 days having tests which came back all clear. I talk with a high pitched voice, make a weird noise when inhailing air either through nose or mouth and breath like a fish out of water.

Saw consultant who said it is damaged vocal chords due to surgery and has referredme to ENT to have a camera through nose to double check.

If this is the case they would wait 6 months as it may sort itself out in that time without the need for any intervention.

I have found a humidifier at night to avoid my throat from drying out helps and also drinking plenty of fluids. Throat lozenges too at times when throat is really dry. Also breathing exercises to ensure I'm taking and filling my lungs rather than short breaths. This seems to be working.

Ring consultants secretary and mention this like I did and you may be seen to check.

    Hope this helps. Take care

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

It is still early days since you have had your surgery but it is a good idea to hear the advice from DeeDee 46 on the forum and get in touch with your specialist's s secretary to let them know. There will be some swelling after the surgery but they may want to review you before your follow up appointment.

if you can't get hold of your Consultant then do make an appointment with your GP to see what they advise. DeeDee 46 suggested a humidifier which you may find helpful at night time.

We have some information about recovery after a thyroidectomy which you can see here

You may also find it helpful to contact the charity The Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust which you can see here

Never feel that you can't contact your doctor with any concerns following your surgery even if it is just to put your mind at rest.

I hope this helps and that as time goes on your symptoms will settle.

If you would like to chat to one of the helpline nurses then you are more then welcome to give us a ring. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    All the Best,
