Mother with vulva cancer

What happens next when vulva cancer has gone from lymph nodes in the groin to now attacking the main artery in that area.? On top of this she also has around a 10cm deep wound in the groin which won't heal because of the cancer?

Is there anything that can be done to help prevent the risk of her haemoraging?

  • Hello TDwalk and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn about your mother and can understand you wanting the best for her.

I'm afraid I don't know what will happen next, however, although there can be a risk of bleeding when vulval cancer spreads to the groin, this may not happen. I think you need to talk to your mother's doctors about this to ask how likely it is and what sort of options there might be if it were to happen.

Sometimes radiotherapy can be used to try and shrink a local recurrence of cancer that is causing troublesome symptoms, but this depends on the situation so again it is something to ask the doctors.

There are nurses who specialise in wound management, they are called tissue viability (TV) nurses. If a TV nurse isn't already involved, it might be worth asking if one of them can help to look after your mother's wound. There are also palliative care nurses who work in hospitals and the community; they specialise in controlling symptoms and may be able to help. If a palliative care team isn't already involved in your mother's care, she could ask for a referral.

Please get back to us if you need to and give us a call if you want to talk anything over, our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here weekdays, 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
