Caring for a basal cell carcinoma pre-surgery

Is there anything I should do to care for my BSC before it is removed?  I have read reports and medical papers from studies abroad suggesting that Frankinsence oil and Tea tree Oil can be used as a topical treatment? Is tea tree oil  OK to use and has any research been done in the UK on the effectiveness of essential oils as an alternative therapy to treat a BSC?

  • Hello and thanks for posting a question

I'm sorry to hear you are waiting to have surgery for a bcc and appreciate you wishing to do all you can to help yourself whilst you wait. I think it is fair to say that usually bcc are best left alone whilst people await treatment and advice by their own specialist team.

Whilst it is easy to read all sorts of claims on the internet about alternative treatments it is important to remain cautious as many of these don't yet have enough research and evidence to back up the claims, and may well cause more harm than good or interfere with other treatments. Do ask your own team if you intend to use any essential oils to check they are safe to use.

We have a section about alternative therapies and aromatherapy in particular here on our website that may be useful to read that also takes you to the Memorial Sloan Kettering hospital here that gives further information about most essential oils.

Basal cell carcinomas and it's treatments are discussed in greater detail here but typically bcc are either treated with topical creams or surgery.

I hope this helps a little and I wish you all the best.

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Thanks for the advice Naomi and thank you for all of the work and support you and the whole organization carry out on a daily basis..

  • If it is BCC, then applying topical ointments/creams I think will not make much difference. I had a patch of BCC removed recently but for a year, I applied tea tree, sudacrem, thinking it was a skin dryness/ spot etc. Did nothing and so I would simply try to keep it clean and not dry out.

  • Thanks for the advice which was very helpful and hopefully others in my position will take note.
