Side effects of a colposcopy

I had a colposcopy on the 28th September and had to have a biopsy at the time due to an abnormal area of cells being found during the procedure. The whole procedure was fairly straight forward - they had to put some stuff on my cervix to remove excess mucus before they could begin, put the dye on and then also added some cream after to help reduce the bleeding. I had very uncomfortable pressure and cramps for the first 24 hours along with bleeding and the remnants of the cream mixture for the first few days. From day 4 post procedure this changed to bloody discharge with specs of black which seems to be the normal healing process however since day 8 I've had intermittent light bloody discharge/light yellow clear but sticky discharge with specs of blood. I'm now on day 12 post procedure and this is still happening. Is this normal? I've had friends that have had the procedure but not the biopsy and I've read conflicting information online about this. I don't want to call my GP unless I have to as it takes a month to get an appointment unless it's urgent, and even then they're very dismissive.

One thing I should probably also mention is that I don't get periods (I'm on the pill) and I bleed for approximately 24 hours after a normal smear test (I've had to have 3 in the past couple of years due to persistent HPV infection but no abnormal cells found until this procedure). When I mentioned this to the nurse at the procedure, she said that it was because the lining of my cervix is more delicate/different than most and although this isn't normal, it's not uncommon in women on the pill but she didn't go into anymore detail than that.

  • Hi Lemming and thanks for posting.

After having a colposcopy and biopsy it takes time for the cervix to heal. You can have bleeding for two to four weeks after the procedure.  It sounds as if your bleeding is getting lighter which would be a usual thing to happen.  Everyone recovers from procedures differently, so your friends may have different experiences to you.

If you notice the bleeding getting heavier which lasts for 24 hours, you can get in touch with the unit where you had the procedure for advice.

If you notice the discharge becoming smelly, you get a high temperature or an increase in pain you should get in touch with your GP.  These are symptoms that may be signs of an infection do it is best to be seen by a doctor to make sure.

I'm not sure what your nurse meant when she said that your cervix is delicate/different to most, but if you wanted to find out what she meant you could ask her at your next appointment.

I hope this is helpful. If you want to talk things through with one of our nurses please give us a call on Freephone 0808 800 4040.  The lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Rachel

  • Thanks Rachel - I appreciate the response! My aftercare letter from the department said it should last several days but wasn't any clearer than that so this helps!

I'm not sure about the lining thing either but she said it can caused by the pill any only seems to really cause an issue with cervical procedures so I'm not worried!

  • Hello,

I've had the same procedure. I have been experiencing yellow sticky discharge too. How long did it last before this goes back to normal?

    Thanks Abi

  • Hey Abi, I had this for 18 days in the end but it eventually stopped - Worth it though as they found high grade CIN2 and now need the loop procedure. Fingers crossed your results are all good!

  • Thanks so much for getting back to me. This has reassured me a lot. I've had this for 8 days nows and didn't know how normal it was. The doctor just said see how you are by week 6 and I'm currently week 4 of having the procedure.
