2 failed Endometrial biopsies! What next?

Due to abnormal bleeding, pain and findings on ultrasound plus a raised CA125 blood test, I was referred for urgent endometrial biopsy. The first attempt was in the outpatient dept just with some oral pain relief. I couldn't tolerate it plus they said they couldn't get in. So referred for biopsy hysteroscopy under General Anesthetic  - had this done which also failed after they tried for 40 minutes in theatre to get through my cervix but they said they couldn't get through. I'm peri  menopausal and still having periods. I've now to be seen urgently by consultant to work out a way forward. My question is, is there any other way to obtain an endometrial biopsy? Any advice or experiences would be much appreciated thank you

  • Hi BirdFlown-1 and thanks for posting.

I'm sorry to hear about the difficult time you have been having.

If you have not already had one, doctors may consider doing a transvaginal ultrasound – where a small probe is inserted in the vagina and uses sound waves to produce an image of the inside of the womb.

It can provide information about changes in womb, ovaries and other structures around the area. This may be possible for you, but you would need to discuss it with your consultant.

We have information here about other scans you can have, but unfortunately the only way to definitively diagnose endometrial cancer it to have a biopsy done.

You said you are being urgently seen by a consultant, who will be able to discuss options with you.  They will have experience of similar situations to yours so can decide how to proceed.

I hope this information is helpful.  You might like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

  • Hi Rachel, thanks so much for your reply. I have indeed already had 2 transvaginal ultrasound scans which both suggested that the biopsy was required. Hopefully my urgent appointment with the consultant won't be too long a wait. It's just rather worrying and I didn't expect that the hysteroscopy under general anaesthetic would have failed. I may call the nurse as you suggested just to ask a few queries and perhaps ease my mind further. I know that all so far are just findings and aren't conclusive but I would just like to think that they will be able to in the end get to that definite diagnosis or otherwise from a biopsy. Thank you

  • Dear Birdflown-1, I hope you are well. I'd be interested to know what the outcome was for you  - did they investigate further? I also had two failed biopsies, exactly the same as you. I though, had an MRI with contrast to follow and am now awaiting a hysterectomy.
