Post Radiotherapy - Pulmonary Fibrosis

Hi

After advice please. 6 weeks into remission. 5 months post radiotherapy. Heavy scarring to right lung. Is this called pulmonary fibrosis?  Coughing all the time, pain around ribs when I bend down. Can't sleep on right side due to too much discomfort.

Any treatment/meds that would help? Already have wedge pillow. Not sleeping well. Chest constantly crackles on right side. Recently feeling tired and a bit fed up.

  • Thank you for your post.

I am very sorry to hear about your symptoms after having lung radiotherapy. This might be lung fibrosis but I am afraid to say we cannot tell you if it is.

I'm sure you have let your lung team know about your symptoms, in particular your lung cancer nurse specialist. If you have not please let them know,  your team are far more likely to know what has happened.

At night sleeping in a more upward position and if you can have some breeze from a window it might help. It might be possible to try some breathing exercises to help strengthen your lungs. I wonder if you need pain relief, especially at night and if an inhaler to help with coughing would be helpful. Ask you nurse if they can help with this.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
