Bowel Cancer

Hello. My mum has just had bowel cancer operation and it was explained that this was curative surgery.  But she got a scan two days before she came home from hospital  they have found something in her liver.  She has to go for a MRI within next two weeks.  Any comments would be great we just don't know what to do next

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I’m sorry your mum needed to have recent bowel surgery and a scan she had before she left the hospital has identified an abnormality in her liver.

Abnormalities can occur for many reasons and although cancer might be a possibility it’s not a foregone conclusion until further tests are carried out.

Try to keep an open mind for now until you know more. But I know waiting when you are worried like this is very stressful.

I hope you'll both know more soon. Give us a ring if you want to talk any of this over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Hello just one more question is it a good thing if the bowel cancer has been removed and it is only they liver problem.  Does this mean she Will potentially only be fighting one cancer

    thanks

  • hello Dartgirl,

the likelyhood is yes the one cancer, being bowel cancer spread to the liver. It feels strange to say that it is good news that they have monitored the liver and picked something up, but better caught as early as possible. No surprise they monitored the liver since bowel cancer does like to go travelling to that destination as l found out myself ten years back. In my case it progressed between pre surgery radio/chemo and bowel surgery, It was fast moving so bowel resection was pushed back and a liver resection took priority.

Good news is that this was really successful and l had no ongoing issues once l overcome the pain of the operation,It sounds like your Mum is under the care of very competent careful hands that are doing everything possible to ensure a successful outcome for her future, which l hope will stretch a long way in front of her,

                                           take care, David

  • Thank you so much for your response I hope we have a positive outcome.  I am glad you are doing so well

    take care xx

  • Hello Dartgirl and thanks for getting back to us,

If your mum's bowel cancer has spread to the liver, I'm afraid that I don't think it is a good thing because cancers are generally more straightforward to treat if they haven't spread. When bowel cancer spreads surgery can sometimes be an option but this would depend on the situation which can vary from person to person.  However as Celene mentioned various things can crop up on liver scans so I think for now it is a waiting game until the doctors can tell your mum more. I hope this is soon.

Please call us if you want to talk things over, our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open weekdays for 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
