Pain in between mastectomy sites

Hi,

Can anyone help please? A relative of mine has had BC twice (triple negative 4 years ago and a different one last February in the other breast) She has noticed that the site between the two mastectomy sites feels sore to touch (like she says feels bruised) the GP felt the site and said she couldn't feel anything, but has referred back to breast clinic to be on the safe side.  I can't get the thought cancer is back out of my head. GP and breast nurse have both said it sounds like nothing and I have seen sites can be tender for years after...please can anyone reassure?

ETA the last mastectomy was march 2021 so 18 months ago

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am very sorry to hear that your relative has had treatment for breast cancer and I can appreciate that you are worried that it could have come back.

Your relative has done the best thing in getting this checked out by her GP and she is now waiting to be seen at the breast clinic. She will be examined there and may need a scan. While I cannot tell you what is the matter (no one here can)  it is possible to just be a sensitive area of skin and nothing to do with cancer. I also think you both should reflect on what the GP and breast nurse have said about it. So hopefully nothing serious is the matter.

Waiting to be seen, I know can be difficult, so you and your relative may find keeping busy with other things and not searching the internet for a possible diagnosis will help you cope better.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
