Cancel colonoscopy ??

Hi, I posted last week. I had blood in my stool and abdominal pain slight fatigue and slight loss of appetite. I went to the doctor who done an examination and thought she may be able to feel a lump (possible polyp) done a stool / fit test which I haven't yet got results for. Anyways, I've had no more blood in my stool and the abdominal pains have subsided/aren't as bad. I'm expecting my fit test to come back negative. My question is - if this does come back negative should I cancel the colonoscopy ? I know there are so many people on waiting lists and struggle to get seen etc, so I don't want to take up any hospital time when it's not necessary.

  • Any help ? I've had a letter from the hospital to ring within 7 days to arrange my colonoscopy and don't know whether to phone and cancel (it says to let them know if I decide this) after lots of reading on here I really think it's probably just internal hemmoroids.

  • Morning

just read your post and all I can say is please please attend this appointment. Even if results come back negative it will be peace of mind. But it may also detect something in its early stages.

Your doctor has made the referral which means they too would like it investigated and see what's what.

I have just had total thyroidectomy due to Cancer and looking back if I had taken symptoms more seriously (on and off pain; coughing fits due to lump pressing on throat etc) then it may have been detected sooner.

Tests like this are always necessary to see what's going on. For your health, for your peace of mind please attend.

    Take care

  • Hi Spark 261 and thanks for posting.

It sounds like you are having an anxious time at the moment.

You went to the GP, who examined you and thought it was necessary to refer you for a colonoscopy. It would be good to keep this appointment.  The symptoms are feeling better at the moment but they may come back and then you would need another referral.  This would mean having to wait for another appointment.

Having a colonoscopy can feel worrying.  We have information on the NHS website here which tells you what to expect when you are attending your appointment.

You're right, it is a very busy time for the NHS and lots of people are waiting for appointments.  However, it is still important to get your symptoms checked out.  The symptoms you are having may not be due to cancer. But if it is, the earlier it's picked up the higher the chance of successful treatment. You won't be wasting anyone's time.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take Care,

    Rachel
