Mucus after Radiotherapy

Hi

Wonder if anyone can advise.

My husband finished radiotherapy and Chemo 2nd Sept for cance back of tongue

He has feeding tube but has just started in the last couple of weeks although painful to eat few teaspoons yoghurt. He tried scrambled egg and rice pudding not a success. He managed few teaspoons stewed apple and custard baby steps but huge progress.  However since sipping cold drinks and teaspoons soft food he is starting to have the worst nights with coughing. We thought liquids etc would help.

He does steam breathing as recommended by hospital 4 times a day and mouth wash but nothing helping if anything getting worse.

Hospital suggested could try buying  nebuliser but said could make dry mouth throat dry worse.

Has anyone experienced this or if could recommend nebuliser any particular brand as so many to choose from.

I just dont know what else to do to help him.

Many thanks

Claire

  • Hi Claire and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your husband's situation and the side effects that he is experiencing.

It may be worth your husband chatting to your GP to see if you can get a nebuliser through them. You could ask at your local chemist about what nebuliser they suggest but some of them are quite expensive and if you can get it through your surgery that may be better. Your GP may also be able to prescribe artificial saliva sprays that may help eating food easier. Your GP may also have suggestions to help with the coughing that he is experiencing at night.

We have some tips on our website about how to keep the mouth from getting dry and ideas on diet suggestions which you can see here

The charity Macmillan also have tips on how to help with a dry mouth which you can see here

They also have some more tips here

There are various organisations that also offer support groups such as The Mouth foundation which you can see here

You may hear from other forum members on what they have found helpful for them. You could also post on a different thread as you have posted on 'ask the nurses' and you may find that you get more replies.

I hope that some of these links will help. Hopefully as time goes on your husband symptoms will improve but I can understand how frustrating it must be for you both waiting for things to get better.

If either you want to ring and speak to one of the helpline nurses then you are more then welcome to do so. We are here from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

All the best to you both

    Catherine
