Oesophegal Cancer?

Hey,

I'm just looking for advice/thinking out loud.

My Dad is currently going through tests for esophegal cancer and quite naturally, we're all a little bit nervous.

He's suffered his whole life with heartburn and occasionally had problems swallowing but in the last couple of years that has got progressively worse to the point where he would struggle to get down some food. Even now this is intermittent but he tends to have to bring up some mucus and give it a bit of time before he can start eating again, he certainly has no problems with drinking.

He went to the doctors a couple of weeks ago and they referred him for an endoscopy. At the time, as well as taking a biopsy, they diagnosed esophegitis/barretts esophegas and told him to come back for a scan in 10 weeks time, they also prescribed omeprazole (I think that's how you spell it)

Fast forward to last week and he got a phone call from the hospital to say that they've re-looked at the images and whatever it is, is looking angrier than they initially thought. They mentioned a possibility of cancer and referred him for a chest/abdo/pelvis CT scan with contrast, which he is due to have on Wednesday.

He's been taking the omeprazole for just over 2 weeks now and is already seeing significant improvement to his eating/swallowing and he isn't bringing up as much mucus.

I was just wondering what everyone elses experiences of potential esophegal cancer were and whether the fact that the omeprazole is working is a good sign or would work the same even if it is cancer?

Many thanks in advance for your help

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I can understand how unsettling it must be for you all waiting for test results to come back.

It is really not until he has had the CT scan that the doctors will be able to tell you more. The Omeprazole is very good with helping with symptoms but it is really only the scan that will give the doctors more information.

I know it is supportive hearing from other members of the forum but everyone's situation is so different so it is difficult to compare one person with another.

I do hope that your dad find's out more soon.

You and your dad are more then welcome to give the helpline a ring to chat to one of the helpline nurses. We are here from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
