Prostate biopsy - Which one?

Hi, My psa levels raised to 4.8. Doctor asked me to do first biopsy (Rectal biopsy). However, I insist Doctor to do Transperineal biopsy in order to avoid post-operative infection.

Could you please advise whether can I choose transperineal biopsy with some other doctor?

  • Hello there

I am sorry to hear you are currently undergoing some tests and appreciate this must be a worrying time for you.

A Trans Rectal UltraSound TRUS guided biopsy is the most common type of prostate biopsy in the UK although Trans Perineal Biopsy are becoming more common with some hospitals only using this type now.

I think it is worth asking again if the hospital you are under can offer Transperineal biopsy but with the understanding that this may be possible or not recommended for you for a particular reason. If they simply only carry out TRUS biopsies it may be possible to ask to be referred to a different hospital but with the consideration that this may delay a possible diagnosis being made.

    I hope this helps

    All the best

    Naomi

  • Thanks a lot Naomi for your advice. Appreciate.
