Post-op concerns around partial thyroid removal

Hi, I am 10 days post-op from having a 5cm lump removed from my left thyroid (half of my thyroid was also removed.) My first follow up appt is in 6 weeks but my neck is very uncomfortable (really tight, I feel like I am being lightly strangled all the time) around the scar area and swallowing anything is uncomfortable. I'm also really tearful, which is unlike me, and constantly tired. I still have steristrips on but can't bring myself to pull them off as the thought of seeing the cut makes me feel sick. Is it normal to feel so tight and uncomfortable around your neck at this point post-op? Just wondering when it will get better as I'm finding it all a bit distressing.

Thank you.

  • Hi

Im nearly 4 weeks after having a 4cm nodule removed and half thyroid. I am also still experiencing discomfort around swallowing which feels like some grisle grating together in my throat and the scar is a bit like something pressing into my windpipe though I can kinda ignore it most of the time. Im really tired too and really lightheaded taking dizzy turns a lot. Its quite debilitating and im hearng of people going back to work a few weeks post op? I currently wouldn't get through a day. I believe the teary thing is not uncommon and tbh I have had those. Sometimes the exhaustion without even managing to do much is overwhelming but theres bound to be a crossover period where the remaining half thyroid needs to take over and produce more thyroxin. It is a big op though and everyones recovery is different. Hope you feel better soon.

  • Hi. I had partial right thyroid early Jan this year, had 2 nodules taken out. My symptoms are exactly same as you, and scar is so tender to touch, and under my chin tingles when i touch.

  • Hi

What i'm wondering is why so little info is given prior to the op. I had no idea I could feel this exhausted, though things are starting to improve a bit. Even upon visiting my GP due to the swelling they didn't really seem to have any answers and 9 weeks to wait before managing to get an apointment with the surgeon seems a long time when there's some concern about being fit enough to go back to work.  I guess it is what it is. At least things are starting to improve.

  • Morning. I was lucky saw surgeon after 4 weeks. 9 seems very long for you? Is it as they are busy? They have started me on thyroid medication, but still taking bloods to check thyroid levels. Still dizzy and just exhausted, not myself. How is your scar looking? Mine looking amazing, just inside doesnt feel right, but surgeon happy with everything at the 4 week check.
