Colonoscopy

Hi I had a colonoscopy on Tuesday and had 4 biopsys taken my abdomen feels tender mild discomfort that keeps shifting from left to right is this normal to feel like I'm bruised inside?

  • If you've had biopsy's taken you are bound to be a bit sore but moving from left to right I'm not sure about ,if I were you I would ring them on the numbers they gave you ,they really will not mind and may put your mind at rest rather than you thinking somethings wrong .

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

After having a colonoscopy, especially if some biopsies are taken, it is possible to have some pain or discomfort for a few days. Also you can get some trapped wind (some gas is inserted into your bowel during the procedure) which might explain the movement of the pain you are getting.  All this should get better within a few days. If you are concerned and feel it is not getting better or that it's getting worse then do seek medical advice. This could be to contact the colonoscopy unit if they gave you a number or you could also let your GP know or call the NHS on 111 for advice on what to do.

It might help, if you haven't already done this, to read the information we have on our website about having a colonoscopy, it describes how it is carried out and it lists the  possible side effects that can happen. Click here  to see it.

I hope you will be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
