frightened about my breasts

Hi I'm 17 nearly 18 in a few months. Just recently I've found a lump in my left breast under my nipple whilst my nipple has been very very sore to touch as well as 'poking' out my toght nipple is sore too but not as bad and there are no lumps in my right breast. Although I am on the implant I do still have monthly period cycles and I've just been on the cycle they also feel different to what the usual period symptoms are. What advice can you give? I really suffer with anxiety too especially GP and Doctors just fear the worst.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

Whenever someone contacts us with something that is worrying them we always suggest they make an appointment to see their GP and get checked out to be on the safe side. But I don’t think you need to be overly concerned as breast cancer would be very rare in someone of your young age. The symptoms you have are much more likely to be caused by ordinary everyday problems that teenagers may get from time to time. This can often be related to hormonal changes.

Breast lumps are very common in young girls. As your breasts are still developing, changes may develop and these are nearly always due to normal changes in the breast tissue. But, I appreciate it can still be worrying when you find differences in how your breasts look or feel.

The organisation Breast Cancer Now has some information about what is normal at this link.  They also have some more information for teenagers here.

To put your mind at rest, it would be a good idea for you to make an appointment to see your GP (you can ask to see a female doctor if one is available). They will examine you and will hopefully put your mind at ease.

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
