Disappearing and Reappearing Mole

Hi All

I am a 41 year old guy and for about 15 years have had a mole that pops up once or twice a year.

When it does it huge, angry, dark purple / black in the centre and raised but easily scratched and painful

The whole area gets itchy then a few days later it arrives, grows to full size over the course of a week then shrinks and disappears

I have spoken to numerous Drs and a dermatologist who all say it's totally fine, but does put the fear of his into me when it arrives

Is this really normal and something that I should not worry about?

  • Hi, I can't really offer any help based on personal experience, but have you thought of having it removed privately? The NHS doesn't removes growths it doesn't see as "dangerous" any more, but I'd consult a private dermatologist if I were you. Best wishes, let us know how you get on.

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

If your mole has been seen by a dermatologist then if there was a concern about it, it would have been removed or biopsied.  It might be a good idea to look back on any letters you got about any appointments you had with a dermatologist to see what was said and why no further action was needed.

I'm afraid we are not able to tell you what this is or if it is anything to be concerned about. Do go back to your GP if you are worried.

You might want to follow the advice of fluffybull who has posted about getting a dermatology appointment privately. Do talk with your GP about doing this.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Hi. I was just googling as I have a similar experience. Is this something you had looked at?
