Breast implant rupture

Hi I couldn't possibly remember when I first noticed my implant was hard a good few years ago, 2 years ago I had a chest X-ray from long covid and the doctor said my implant had ruptured, at this point I wasn't overly concerned as I'd read it wouldn't cause me harm however I had been noticing it's been more painful. GP said she would refer me to Brest clinic but think that got forgotten with the pandemic ect so this brings me to lately , my breast is so misshapen if I lie on my side the lump in it is huge almost as if I have tennis ball attached to it. ! It does cause me some pain now and I'm concerned with various symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, headache and generally feeling not right so I came here for some advice ! I didn't for one second think implants caused any type of cancer and now I'm frightened I've left it so long ! Please help me x I should also say I have a lump in my lymph node but GP wasn't concerned that appeared around the time after covid 2 years ago I had an MRI and doctor wasn't sure what it was and no other investigations were needed . My breast implants are over 20 years old and are the cohesive gel type xx

  • Hi Laura

my friend has had the same as you she's had terrible trouble since Jan last year but she found a lump been from pillar to post they told her they are checking for BIA -ALCL but can't take a biopsy cause of where implants are so she's finally got a appointment next week to go under anaesthetic to get a biopsy done , don't think for one min yours could be the same I just wanted to tell you her story x hope it's of help to you x

  • Thankyou for your advice good to know I'm not alone x

  • She had mammogram and about 3 biopsy in total but they can't get enough out so this is why she's got to go to theatre bless her xx

good luck let us no how you get on xx

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I'm really sorry but no one here can tell you what may be going on as there could be many different reasons for these symptoms. Try not to worry but I really do suggest you arrange an appointment with your GP so they can assess you properly.

It sounds like they might want to refer you to the breast unit to be on the safe side so do get in touch with them and see what they have to say.

I hope everything is okay for you.

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Thankyou I will try to get an appointment tomorrow x

  • Morning. I will try to get an appointment today . Has the rupture of the implant put me more at risk of alcl ? I'm confused why I was left when the rupture was discovered . X

  • Managed to see doctor referred for mammogram xxx

  • Hello Laura4550 and thanks for getting back to us,

I am glad that you have been able to see your GP .

As far as I am aware implant rupture isn't known to increase the risk of developing anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) which is a very rare condition anyway so the risk is small.

There is a booklet about breast augmentation (implants) here on the website of The British Association of Aesthetic Surgeons in case it would be useful to recap on.

If you haven't seen it already, there is some expert advice for women with implants about breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma on the GOV.UK website at this link

I hope this is of some use.

    Best wishes,

    Julia

  • Update : so I went the docs and they referred me within a day I was seen in the breast clinic yesterday. They did mammogram and ultra sound they didn't seem concerned about ALCL as there wasn't any fluid around the implant , there is however silicone in my lymph nodes ( under my arm) I told them about the lump in my neck too. Like I said in my previous post I've been feeling poorly and have intermittent chest pain and breathing issues and now I'm wondering if I have silicone on my lungs , I had a ct scan with covid 2 years ago and they said my lungs were glass like due to covid but what if it was due to silicone ? We waited to see the surgical consultant again to explain everything but they went to a meeting so I'm waiting on a letter for a report and date for pre op. I am relieved it isn't cancer but the thought of silicone causing havoc in my body is frightening! Does anyone know what it does to the body Dr Google is driving me insane . Thanks love and light Laura xxx

  • Hello again and thanks for the update

So pleased you have been seen and assessed and a plan of action in place of what needs to happen next.

I'm afraid I don't think google or anyone else on here can tell you much more about the silicone and it would be best to talk through these concerns with the hospital looking after you. So do contact them again and see if a time can be arranged to ask these questions to them.

    Wishing you all the best

    Take care
