Progressive Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma

Hi.

I wonder if anyone can help me. I have been trying to find out about progressive Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma. My brother has been getting IV chemo for a NHL growth that was removed from his bowel. He is almost finished his chemo, with just one session left. He recently had a scan which has shown a spot on the lung. Is this progressive NHL, and if so, what is the prognosis. I seem to be going round in circles, and am quite confused by the data. He is 83 years old, but has always been physically fit. I would love to hear from anyone who may be able to help. Thank you. Mary.

  • Hi Mary and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your brother.

Non Hodgkin's lymphoma is quite a complicated condition with many different types and subtypes.

It is principally divided in to high grade lymphoma and low grade lymphoma. High grade lymphoma grows at a much faster rate. It is quite difficult to be too specific about your brothers case as I don't have enough details and I am not his doctor.

If his scan showed a new spot on his lung then this would probably mean progressive but your brother may still have quite a slow growing lymphoma. Really the only person who will really be able to tell you more are his doctors.

Prognosis is a difficult thing to predict and there are many other factors involved such as a patient's general health, age, how aggressive their cancer is, how they tolerate any treatment and also their response to any treatment. We have a page on our website on survival of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma which you can see here

Even though it is useful hearing other members of the forum it is quite difficult to be too specific as there are so many variations. It may be helpful if you could sit in on some of his appointments so you can find out more.

The charity Lymphoma action have some useful information on this condition and the different types which you can see here

You may find it more helpful to ring our helpline and talk to one of our helpline nurses. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040. We are here Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
