Autoimmunity

Hi

I have recently been diagnosed with advanced cancer but also have psoriatic arthritis, "an autoimmune disease" that has been stable for the last 30 years. My treatment options could include the use of immunotherapy which would improve the possible outcomes, however my oncologist refuses to prescribe the immunotherapy on account of the autoimmune disease,I have researched the topic and it seems, yes there is increased risk, but it is manageable and in most other country's I would just be treated.
Does anyone else know of someone being treated in the uk with immunotherapy and autoimmunity, I'm I a victim of a postcode lottery and a very busy NHS?

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation.

Immunotherapy uses are immune system to fight cancer. It works by helping the immune system to recognise and attack cancer cells.

From what I have read there does not seem to be enough information from clinical trials that have looked at the safety aspects of using immunotherapy with patients and autoimmune diseases. This may be the reason that your doctor is reluctant to consider immunotherapies. There are NICE (National Institute for health and Care Excellence) guidelines that doctors follow which may exclude patients with autoimmune conditions.

If you have a rheumatologist who is monitoring your psoriatic arthritis you could also ask their opinion.

You may find that other patients post with their experiences or you could always post  on a different thread where you may get more responses. Everyone's situation is slightly different though and it is difficult to compare one persons situation with another.

You could also consider getting a second opinion from another oncologist but you may have to pay for it. We have information on getting a second opinion here

I am sorry not to be able to help more but you are more then welcome to ring and discuss any of this with one of the helpline nurses. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the Best,

    Catherine

  • Are you currently on immunosuppressants? It would be helpful to know if you are asking about other people with auto-immune conditions as could be a difference between someone on one or more immunosuppressants switching to immunotherapy as opposed to someone whose disease has been stable without immunosuppressant(s) for long period.
