Pain during Colonoscopy

To say the least i was shocked by the extent off pain received during my Colonoscopy.
stupidly i was convinced that with the sedation & pain medication given i would sail through with little pain & discomfort, unfortunately this was not the case.
i suffer with Arthritis so i am pretty used too pain trying only too take pain killers when necessary.
i was given the meds in the surgical room that did not do what i was expecting it too do, i was in excruciating pain, i asked them too top up twice and made the staff aware off how painful it was, i was calm throughout.
The Gastroenterologist did not say a word or try to reassure me. The wonderful nurse was shocked at how much pain i was in and could only advise as too how far the doctor had got  and it would be over soon.
The procedure was definitely not as expected by reading through other reviews, the meds were not adiquate for the procedure, i would never have this done again with out proper sedation and adequate pain medication.
Before the procedure i was told what meds i would be given, however i did not ask how much off the medication was to be given, clearly not enough for the pain relief needed.
my advise would be too ask, as from reviews people where laughing after theres and had a completely different outcome.

  • Hello there

I am sorry to hear about you needing to have a colonoscopy and for the pain you experienced.

Everyone is different when it comes to tests and it is always important to let the team involved in your care to know how you are feeling during a test or procedure so they can stop or try other things to make things more manageable.

Do talk through this experience with the hospital and give the department your feedback so they can talk through what happened with you to help you process this.

Wishing you all the best moving forward

    Naomi
