How long for biopsy results

Hello,

I had a breast lump biopsy taken last week,on Thursday, and the lady who took it,said that I'll received a phone call in a week with the results. But no one called me yet,I've tried to call them today, but no one picked up the phone,so I left a message.

I'm not sure ,should I worried(if it's possible to worry more than I already worry)..

Is it a good sign that there is no news yet,or it's bad??

My mind is going crazy ,especially this two last days..I'm trying not to think about it,but I start to have nightmares,so there is no rest

Can you give me some advice, what is the normal time to receive the answer? And why they said a week ,and no one is calling..I prefer to tell me to expect a phone call, instead of telling me that with a time frame..because now my mind is thinking all the bad scenario..

I can not talk about all that with my partner, because I have the feeling that I put some presure on him with that..(probably is only in my head). But he is trying to reassure me that there is nothing wrong and not to worry, but I can't help it

And do you know if they are giving answers on weekends,or only during the week?

  • Hi,

Sorry that you find yourself here. Waiting for results is such a stressful time. The worst part in my opinion.

In my experience and from reading lots on here, I think two weeks is probably average for biopsy results. It's annoying that they told you one week if they weren't able to meet that time frame. Totally right that not being given that time would have been better for your stress levels!

I hope you get your results soon and that it is good news for you.

    Take care x

  • Thank you, yeah I saw the same, two week usually. But this time is not passing, and with each day the level of my anxiety is getting worse.I'm.trying not to show it,because my baby girl is really sensitive and I don't want her to feel that something is wrong. But it's eating me from inside, just to not know what it is,and I just get scared and overwhelm with it.Thank you for replying,I really appreciate it.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I don't think that you can read anything in to the fact that you haven't heard about your breast biopsy. A lot will depend on how many samples the lab have had to process at your hospital.

I can understand how unsettling it must be for you waiting. I would try and give the clinic a ring and ask them when they think you might get your results. Breast clinics are usually not open at the weekends but every clinic is slightly different so it is difficult to compare one with another.

I do hope you know more soon.

If you feel that you would like to chat any of this through with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are welcome to give us a ring. our number is 0808 800 4040.

    All the Best,

    Catherine

  • Hi Aspy234, my biopsy results took about 2 weeks to come back. I had an appointment to get the results but even after 2 weeks all the results were not back but the main ones were. I know exactly what you mean by the waiting time, it does make you go into overload we have all been through it on here.

I hope you get your results soon.

    Best wishes xx

  • Hello,

I wanted to ask you should I be worried?

I was suppose to receive my results 2 weeks ago from my first biopsy,I've called the clinic twice already and had to leave a message. No one contacted me yet,but couple of days ago I received a letter and they book another appointment for a second biopsy..I spoke as well with my GP ,if she have the results from the first one and if they send her any explanation why I need a second one?Buy they didn't send her any explanation for the second biopsy, except for a letter from the breast specialist(I assume she wrote it after she send me to the ultrasound),with her suggestions  what it could be,that's before she have  any pictures of the ultrasound and the results of the biopsy,it's written also that they will discuss everything on their meeting and when they have a decision ready will inform her..

My next appointment is on 10th of October, which mean two weeks time after that will be around 24th..which means that more than a month I will have no idea what is happening, and what kind of a lump I have..Worried sick already..

Is it a common practice ,not to give you results and to have 2 biopsys?

Is it because they found something?Should be I worried???

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you are needing to wait longer than you thought for results and appreciate how unsettling this must be for you.

Unfortunately as we are not involved in your care we cannot say why they haven't spoke to you about the reason for another biopsy. This is often because the first biopsy didn't show what they were hoping sometimes called inconclusive so they need to repeat to hopefully get a better sample and picture about what the lump is being caused by.

As easy as it is try not to worry too much until you know more, needing to have another biopsy is fairly common and doesn't necessarily mean you have cancer.

I hope you know more very soon.

Do get back if you have more questions or wish to talk it through over the phone. Our number is 0808 800 4040, mon-fri 9-5.

    Take care
