Post-Surgery Scar Advice

I had a right hemicolectomy 11 weeks ago for mucinous adenocarcinoma. It was keyhole but converted to open and I now have a 6inch scar running up from just above my belly button. All is healing well but the scar is still very tender when I try to lie on my tummy. I suffer with disc herniation at L3/4 and had been having regularly sports massages for this previously. I now find myself unable to lie to have this done and am struggling with my back pain. From your experience, do you have any idea of how long the discomfort will last and when I might be able to lie on my tummy for 30-60 minutes again? Thank you for your help.

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your recent surgery and the pain and discomfort you are experiencing around the scar.

Wound healing can vary greatly between patients and it can be difficult to know how quickly someone will recover from an operation and be able to return fully to normal activities.

It must be frustrating not being able to lie on your tummy to have your massage to ease your back issues but wondering if you can ask your therapist if they can still carry out the massage lying or sitting in a different position until things improve.

Do let your team or GP know if the pain continues or you notice anything else around the wound site.

Wishing you all the best and do get back if you have more questions.

    Take care

    Naomi
