  • Hello and thanks for your post

I presume your GP made an urgent referral for you to see a NHS dermatologist, but when they looked at your referral you were not assessed as urgent.  People who have non urgent skin conditions can wait several weeks to see a specialist on the NHS.  When cancer is suspected the referral is marked as urgent and people should see a dermatologist within 2 weeks.

Hospitals will do their best to meet waiting targets, however many are finding this difficult to achieve. This could be due to staff shortages and the effect the pandemic still has on NHS services.  If you are concerned about this you might want to contact the hospital's Patient Advice and Liaison Service ( PALS) to discuss this.

There is always the option of going private but it may be be very expensive. I'm afraid I don't know how much it would cost but in most hospitals now there is a Private Patient's Officer who may be able to advise on this further. The Private Health website has information about private hospitals in the UK and may also be able to give you some idea.

I hope you know more about your situation soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
