Ovarian cyst/raised CA125 what happens next?

Hi

I'm a 43-year old woman and have had bloating and been tender down below so the doc ran some tests.

I have a slightly raised CA125 at 47.

An ultrasound showed a cyst of 4cmx4cm on my right ovary. When I read about cyst sizes they refer to it with just one digit, E.g. 4cm or 10cm. Does that mean I have a 4cm cyst or would it be 16cm? Prob a stupid question - sorry!

I have my gynaecologist appointment on Tuesday. Could anyone tell me what to expect?

This past week I have had constant low level back pain  and occasional shooting pains inside me.

Could a benign cyst also cause this?

Thanks so much. I'm pretty anxious and thinking the worst.

  • Hi

Sorry I can't help much but I think that means you have a 4cm cyst. I say that because mine was described as 27cmx21cmx16cm so if it was multiplied it would be bigger then me!

Its great you have an appointment and you will be in the best hands and I'm sure they will answer your questions and concerns.

The CA125 is a indicator but different things can cause it to be higher so try not to worry.

I am still waiting for my appointment but hopefully will hear soon as I desperately need my 'rugby ball' removed.

    Take care x

  • I had bilateral complex ovarian cysts 6cm and 4cm they were removed due to my age over 65. They can be precancerous. The multiple biopsies taken during the operation were benign fortunately, the surgery was difficult due to extensive adhesions from previous surgery.
l hope that your cysts have a similar outcome

    take care susie

  • [@Hollieberri]‍ Thanks so much for replying. Yes, sounds like you don't multiply it then.

That sounds like a big cyst you have :( I hope it isn't causing you too much distress and you get an appointment soon.

  • Thanks [@Alfieisastar]‍

that's reassuring to know your cyst was benign. I'm hoping for the same but my mind is going into overdrive.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear you have pain and discomfort and are going through some tests.  I can appreciate your concern.

I am afraid but I don't know if your cyst measures 4cm or is bigger this can be explained to you by the gynaecologist when you are seen.

The CA125 result is not a perfect test and can be risen for non-cancerous reasons.  Also not all ovarian cysts are caused by cancer and the pain you have can be caused by non-cancerous cysts too.

At your appointment you will have an opportunity to go over the results of the tests you have had and to ask questions. You may need to have a further tests.  I hope it goes well.
