M4/U4

Hello,

I'm 31 years old and just had a core biopsy in my right breast. I have a meeting Friday to discuss plan of action but I've not been told results yet.

I have just received a letter to say U4/M4 Mass arising.

Stupidly Internet research on my part is saying its pointing to cancer?

  • Hi Mocana and thanks for posting.

It sounds like you are having a worrying time.

The letters U and M would normally relate to the investigations that you have already had, so U is for ultrasound and M for mammography.

Having the number 4 next to them mean that there is a moderate chance that the findings will be cancer.  This is probably why you have had the biopsy.

I don't think this letter is telling you the result of the biopsy, I think it is telling you the results of the ultrasound and mammogram.  Only the biopsy can confirm what the lump is and what the treatment will be.

Waiting for results and plans can be a really stressful time, and lots of people turn to the internet to get more information.  The problem with this is that lots of the information is unreliable.  It is often better to wait to speak to your doctors who can tell you exactly what is happening and what will happen next.

Try and distract yourself before your appointment on Friday, carry on with your normal routine, and try not to keep looking for answers on the internet.

I hope this information is useful.  It may be helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take Care

    Rachel
