I probably need to ask doctor to test for prostate cancer, but tbh am scared. I have a very low pain threshold, and am told that the biopsy is very bad. Can I insist, if things get that far, on having a general anaesthetic?

Hi PortchieBoy and thanks for posting.
It sounds like this is something you are very worried about. It's important to remember that most prostate cancers don't cause symptoms and it is more likely that any symptoms you have are due to other causes. But if it does turn out to be cancer, the earlier it is picked up the higher the chance of successful treatment.
We do have some information on out website about seeing a GP when you are worried about prostate cancer and what might happen next:
https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/prostate-cancer/getting-diagnosed/seeing-your-gp
You can let your GP know that you are very worried about having tests and discuss your pain threshold with them. The first steps would usually be to have PSA blood test and a digital rectal examination. They may also ask for a urine sample to rule out any infection causing your symptoms.
You might have this rectal examination at your GP surgery or at the hospital. The doctor or nurse will ask you to lie on your side on an examination table, with your knees brought up towards your chest. They will slide a finger gently into your back passage. They’ll wear gloves and put some gel on their finger to make it more comfortable.
You may find it slightly uncomfortable or embarrassing, but the test isn’t usually painful and it doesn’t take long.
There is some information you may find helpful if you were to need a biopsy below. Depending on the type of biopsy you have, you will either have a local or a general anesthetic.

I hope this information is useful. It may be helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
Take care,
Rachel
