Oseophageal cancer

How long does surgery take, roughly and how long are you in hospital for ?

  • Hello Steve_W

I noticed that you've posted in our Ask the Nurses topic area. The team won't be back in the office now until Tuesday so you'll receive a response from them in due course.

In the meantime, I wanted to let you know that we have quite a number of people here on the forum who have had treatment for oesophageal cancer. I'd suggest having a look at this thread and maybe posting a message there. I'm sure that some of them will reply to share their experiences with you.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello and thanks for your post

How long your surgery takes will depend on the type of operation you will have. Your specialist team should be able to clarify this for you, but you are likely to be in surgery for several hours. The length of your hospital stay will also depend on the type of operation you will have. But you may be in hospital for around 10 to 14 days after surgery to remove your oesophagus. This may vary depending on how you recover following your surgery.

I hope this helps and that everything goes well for you. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
