Coloposcopy, been waiting for over 6 months

I am 25 years old, I got my first Colopscopy back at the beginning of Feb, I received a letter on the 31st of March, letting me know I have HPV and required a colposcopy, I've chased my doctors multiple times, who have spoken with the colposcopy ward who have said I'm on the list but there's a delay since covid.

I'm so anxious to get my colposcopy, I've had irregular periods for as long as I can remember, with extremely heavy blot clots & flows, bleeding in between periods and have had period gaps of 6 months. I've always had a feeling something hasn't been quite right but, been dismissed by doctors who have just tried to put me on the pill. I've been with the same partner for 3 years now so know this has been in my system since then.

On Christmas eve last year, I went to my doctor who checked my cervix because I was experiencing pain during sex and abnormal bleeding, she said she could see white cells on the outside of my cervix but said it was fine and named it something long and said not to worry, but now finding out it is HPV, finding it so frustrating.

Has anyone any advice on what I can do? I just want to get my colposcopy done to make sure everything is okay :(

  • Hello Katrinaxx and thanks for posting,

Sometimes it is possible to go on to a cancellation list at the colposcopy clinic/ward if you can attend at short notice, but apart from that I'm afraid as your GP has already chased this up, I don't know how you can get a colposcopy appointment any sooner in the NHS.

You mentioned having irregular periods. These may well be unrelated to your screening test result (which found HPV). Hormonal imbalance can cause irregular bleeding and as this was going on when you had the colposcopy in February, it seems unlikely that the bleeding is happening because there is something the matter with your cervix. I think if there had been anything wrong enough to cause the bleeding it would have been seen.

I hope your appointment comes through soon.

Give us a ring if you want to talk anything, our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes,
