Radiotherapy and children

Hi, does anyone know if it's safe to be around young children whilst having external radiotherapy? Conflicting information on the internet, I haven't been told to stay away from grandkids, but saw an article about this, i would assume I would have been told this if it was an issue by oncologist etc? Any info appreciated as have been looking after grandkids and now worried thank you.

  • My wife was around pets and kids, and at no time was she told not to. I think it's the tracers etc that they put into you for scans and such things that require you to keep your distance, not the radiotherapy treatment itself. As it's just being used at a specific point/area, and doesn't get emitted the same way as it would getting tracers put into you in a systematic way. Only thing that was mentioned as far as i can recall was breastfeeding, but yeah, that was just mentioned because it had to be mentioned, not because my wife was or because it was relevant to our circumstances.

I'm no expert, and it's probably wise to mention this to the nurses or doctor treating you, but I do think it's ok. My wife had the maximum dosage too, so we're not talking about a small amount.

  • Good morning thanks for taking the time to reply, sounds reassuring, but will check as you say. Have a great day.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

As you are having external radiotherapy it won't make you radioactive. It's safe for you to be around other people, including pregnant women and children. You can read more about this link.

I hope this helps.  Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Thanks very much Celene, that's reassuring.
