Question about submandibular lymph nodes

Hey, I've had swollen submental, submandibular and cervical  lymph nodes for 2 years. On both sides. They’ve never changed and they are all below half an inch in size, non tender and moveable. I'm also very slim so that may me why I can feel my cervical and submental nodes. I can also only feel the nodes when I dig for them. I've also never experienced any symptoms of lymphoma. Could these be permanently enlarged due to and old oral or dental infection? I have been googling it and Google suggests that it's lymphoma since the lymph nodes have be swollen for so long. What else could this perhaps be or what other problems can cause a lymph node to remain enlarged for so long because my anxiety is really bad especially since I've been reading that this may be cancer...

  • Hello there

I see you messaged us a few days ago and therefore I don't really have much more to add from what Catherine said to you.

As these lymph nodes haven't changed in the past 2 years and you aren't experiencing any other symptoms it is unlikely anything is going on.

If however you are worried do get them checked out by your GP who hopefully can reassure you further.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • I've been told that it's extremely unlikely for these lymph nodes to be cancerous since there just below half an inch and have never changed over a 2 year period. And since I've also got no symptoms of lymphoma. But would it be just unlikely or extremely unlikely for these to be cancerous based on there circumstances? And could still possibly be reactive lymph nodes even if I've been able to feel the nodes for around 2 years?

  • Hello Greer2204,

Thank you for getting back to us.

I think you need to ask your doctor these questions assuming it was them who told you that lymphoma was extremely unlikely. I am afraid I am not in a position to be able to quantify this statement for you. But it does sound very reassuring.

Infections are a common underlying reason for lymph nodes to get bigger, some infections can be chronic or recurrent, although infections usually have accompanying symptoms.

As you have ongoing concerns about these lymph nodes do talk to your GP and get their input.

If you want to talk anything over please give us a call on 0808 800 4040, we are around weekdays from 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia

  • A doctor on the form said that it's unlikely for it to be cancerous and that it's unlikely that anything is going on. But would it be unlikely or extremely unlikely for anything to be occurring?

  • Hello again

I'm sorry but we are not involved directly in anyone's care so it is difficult to quantify a persons risk.

As many people have said it is unlikely if the lumps haven't changed in 2 years and you haven't experienced  any other symptoms for there to be anything serious the matter but do get this checked out with your own GP as this sounds like this is worrying you.

Sorry we can't be of more help

    Take care

    Naomi

  • What are some possibilities as to why my nodes are feelable though? Could it even just be due to me being very slim? Or could it have been due to an infection that I had 2 years ago? I just don't know what else it could be apart from cancer... that's why I'm looking for a little peace of mind.

  • Hello and thanks for your further post

I'm afraid we can't add anything further to what we have already told you.

You are obviously very worried about this, so as my colleagues have suggested it's best to talk this through further with your GP.

    Best wishes,

    Celene
