Letrizole

My 93 year old Mother has been diagnosed with breast cancer, she also has heart failure. We noticed her whole demeanor changed whilst on Letrizole and on advice of her nurse we stopped giving her it. She was told a few weeks later that her tumour had shrunk, which was fantastic news! The dilemma we have is whether to restart her drug, which means she may be totally miserable or risk the cancer spreading? As I said she is 93 and we don't want the days she has left feeling depressed.

  • Hi Aquamo, and thanks so much for posting.

I'm sorry to hear about the difficulties your mother was having whilst taking letrozole.

It would be worth her talking through the risks and benefits of taking the letrozole with her breast care nurse, and whether any other hormone treatment may be suitable for her.

People often experience side effects when taking a hormone treatment, sometimes these side effects settle down. For other people they are long lasting, and they may try another hormone treatment to see whether side effects are more manageable.  Your mum's specialist nurse or doctor would be able to discuss whether there would be any other suitable treatments.

As you said your mum is 93. Sometimes looking at the effects that treatment has on quality of life, so how people are enjoying each day, is a really important part of making decisions around treatment.  How does she feel about going back on letrozole?

There is some information on another website about living with the side effects of letrozole which may be useful.

I hope this information is helpful but if you or your mum would like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline please give us a ring on Freephone 0808 800 4040.  The lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care

    Rachel
