Waiting 17 months for Hysteroscopy

Hello, I went to see my GP in April 2021 because of very heavy and painful periods and sometimes bleeding after sex. Was sent for an internal scan and ultrasound and then lady said the thought it was a large polyp on the lining of my womb but could be a fibroid and they wanted to send me for a hysteroscopy. This was May 2021 - it's now September 2022 and I'm still no further to getting my appointment. I was given the number of the Gynae department and ring every month - they're so lovely but say I'm on the list but as I'm not a priority it probably won't be this year.

I went back on the pill a few months ago to see if this would help and it's helped make them less painful a little bit but still bleeding after sex sometimes and I'm starting to worry incase whatever it is does turn into something sinister.

I've been back to my GP and they were understanding but that they couldn't do anything more so I'm just waiting.

I'm 35, married. No children (by choice) I'm starting to get scared and it's affecting my mental health and can't afford to go private.

Can something like a uterine Polyp actually be cancer?

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I'm so sorry that you are suffering physically and mentally with these endometrial polyps. Do be reassured that if they were concerns about the polyp, your surgery would have been triaged to have happened sooner. Unfortunately we are hearing of non urgent surgeries taking a while to get through the system.

These polyps are very rarely cancer and women can have them and not know they are there. I have placed information created by a NHS hospital here in case useful.

I wonder if you could speak to your GP again and talk through how these side affects are affecting your mental health. They may be able to send an additional referral stating this. The only other thing would be to talk through this with PALS at your hospital who are the patient liaison team, I've placed a link to them here.

Take care LV and you may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. If so, the number is Freephone 0808 800 4040, and the lines are open 9 till 5, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.

  • Thank you so much Sarah,

That's put my mind at ease a little. I do know if it was urgent then I wouldn't be waiting this long and would hate for me to take the place of someone who is urgent there's just that little niggle in the back of my head of 'what if'.

i will take a look at the links you have posted.

    thank you for your help.
