Lump in neck

So 6 years ago I started getting white patches on the side of my tongue while I was pregnant.. they went away eventually, November last year when I was 7 month pregnant they came back (they are just about going away now) they wasn't constant they'd come and go, I am a smoker .. anyway I was having constant sore throats and ear aches and last week I found a lump in the left side of my neck.. I've had a telephone call with my dr who said he believes it's just a swollen lymph node, but I really feel like I'm not been taken serious, I suffer health anxiety bad!!! I don't feel I've been check properly, I have lots of hard bone like ridges in the middle of my hard palate. I've seen my dentist about this and the white patches who said he's not concerned or put it down to food irritation but they aren't going away? And then paired with the lump? My dr said the lump won't be related to my sore throat and ear ache? But they are both symptoms of mouth cancer? I don't know what else to do? I asked my dr (before I found the lump) during a mouth inspection if I had cancer and he said definitely not he wouldn't of thought so, but I don't believe him, I feel like I have too many symptoms! I can't settle it's constantly on my mind . Anyone had these symptoms?

  • Hello and thanks for your further post

I'm afraid that I can't really add much more to what my colleague Julia has already told you.

We always encourage people to go back and see their GP if their symptoms are not improving. You may find it helpful is to ask the GP how long you should wait for symptoms to get better before going back. It is useful to ask this as it does put the onus on your doctor to see you again if things do not improve. You could ask again about a referral to the ENT clinic. If they don't think this is necessary ask them to explain why.

Anxiety can be very debilitating and it can have a very negative impact on your quality of life. So do speak to your GP when you get the chance and they may suggest restarting your medication. I don't know if you are aware of an organisation called  Anxiety UK. They are a national organisation who help people with anxiety. You may also find the information on the NHS website Every Mind Matters helpful.  They have a specific section about managing anxiety.

I hope this is of some help.

    Best wishes,

    Celene

  • Hello,

thank you for another reply. I've saw another gp today who rang about my symptoms and of course the lump in my neck. I've been in and she's checked me over, she said the lump is a tiny lymph node and she's not worried about it, she checked my ears and throat which she said are all normal she's not worried, she agrees the roof of my mouth is inflamed and looks sore so prescribed me something to try but also said if I'm 2-3 weeks it's not better she'll refer me to a oral doctor. But there's nothing in my mouth she thinks looks suspicious.

i came of anxiety medication while I was pregnant but today I asked her if she could put me on some more because this is taking over now. So thank you for mentioning that I will also look at those websites. I'm going to stay off Google and try not to worry.

again thank you for taking the time to reply.

  • Hi Sam

I was just wondering if you had any update on the tests you had? I hope everything is going as well as it can be and that you are on the road to recovery!
