Colonoscopy clear but can biopsies still show cancer?

I had a colonoscopy today which came back 'clear'.

On my notes it says there was no evidence of cancer but the mucosa appears burnt out in the distal sigmoid.

I had no polyps but 14 biopsies!

She told me there was also inflammation.

Could there be a chance of the biopsies coming back showing cancer?

I know I should have asked this while I was there but my mind has been allover the shop.

  • Hello Tia,

I think you should have some reassurance that you were told that there is no evidence of cancer. However, I am afraid I do not know what the mucosa appearing burnt means but again there was no mention of cancer in relation to it.

Inflammation may be caused by non-cancerous conditions which are less serious than cancer but may need to be treated.

I know that waiting for biopsy results can be a worry but I think your doctor was very thorough and is not necessary expecting to see cancer.

I hope you don't have to wait too much longer.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
