CT scan Results - neck and chest

Hi, i had a private CT scan and this is the results.   Im hoping someone can help me understand what it means.   I had the CT after an ultrasound on my neck.  the ultrasound on my neck showed multinodular goitre (thyroid nodules) and slight substernal goitre.  i had the CT on my neck an chest.

Limited examination, the skull base and nasopharynx have not been imaged. Within these confine, no gross abnormality of the visualised oral cavity, oropharynx and larynx demonstrated. 11 mm soft tissue focus at the tail of the left parotid may represent a small intraparotid lymph node, however, requires further evaluation at ultrasound. There are small thyroid nodules. No focal pulmonary lesion. Minor coronary artery calcification, consider review of modifiable cardiovascular risk factors.

can anyone help please.

  • Hello Dani,

I am afraid that we are not able to fully explain the result of your CT scan. This should be done by the doctor that ordered it. If you cannot get back to that doctor then perhaps your GP will explain it to you.

I can see that a ultrasound scan is recommended to view a lymph node and you perhaps need to talk with your GP about some minor artery calcification you have also.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • thanks for your response.

ive been referred to endocrinology which is good but its currently a 5-7 month waiting time before im seen.    i really though with the lump being found that it would be a two week wait referral.    i dont know what to think.

  • Hello and thanks for posting again,

I am sorry to hear that your appointment did not go so well.

I would perhaps try and make another appointment with a different GP hopefully face to face so you can go through it all again. It sounds like the CT scan showed that you needed a ultrasound of your parathyroid lymph node so it could be looked at in more detail. Lymph nodes can go up and down and on most occasions are harmless but the doctor reporting on your test suggested a further ultrasound.

Your scan also showed thyroid nodules.  These are very common and thyroid cancer is not common. You may be interested in reading The British thyroid Organisation leaflet here

I am sure if your GP was concerned she would have organised tests straight away and/ or a referral to see a specialist doctor but of course I can't be sure. You could also talk to your GP about your minor artery calcification and your general health.

I hope this has helped and that you manage to talk to someone soon.

Try not to overthink it if you possibly can.

    Take Care,

    Catherine

  • UPDATE

so ive just had my ultrasound of my parotid and he says the 11mm is a small lymphnode that he isnt worried about.   he rescanned my thryoid and a nodule has grown so he is requesting i have it biopsied.  the left hand side of my throat has been sore recently and i can now feel the growth.  i cant help but worry.   x

  • Did u know you had 2 goiters before did u have a goiter lump Dani x

  • Hi Bev.  Yes I was told previously that I had multinodular goitre on a private scan in august.  But he said he wasn't concerned.    X

  • Can you see the goiters in your neck xx

  • In person no. But I'm not a small lady, I have multiple chins ‍♀️

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

It can be difficult when you are waiting for procedures and results to think about anything else. This anxiety can grow and take over a lot of your life for that period of time.

Until you have had the biopsy and results come back it is difficult to say what may or may not be happening. But if you can try to keep your self busy and your mind distracted this may help time pass quicker and reduce some anxiety. I wonder if you have someone you trust that you can talk it through with.

Take care Dani, and I hope you get all your answers soon.

    Sarah.
