First smear test results abnormal

Hi I had my first smear test a few week ago I am 24. Got my results back this weekend and they came back abnormal. Positive HPV & low grade dyskaryosis came back on my results. Not what I was expecting as this was my first ever smear test scared and not really sure what it all means. Thinking about ringing doctors for a chat Monday. Has anyone else been in the same situation and had their colposcopy examination and results? my coloscopy isn't for another 6 weeks :( any replies would be appreciated x

  • Hi

I have HPV and I have always had some grade of dyskaryosis show on my smears (usually high grade). Low grade dyskaryosis means that they have found small changes in the cells on the cervix. These are usually nothing to worry about because it means it is only affecting a small area on the cervical surface. After your colposcopy you'll probably have to have another smear after 6 months just to check that the changes have gone.

    Xxx

  • Hi

thann you for replying this makes me feel better! i do get some symptoms of cervical cancer like always tired, bloating, bad smelling discharge some times a little pain during sex so now Iv had my results back started to make me think all these things are because of this suppose your mind just takes over!

  • Hi

Of course your mind takes over.....it's normal to fear the worst when we get told that something is wrong, especially if no one explains to you what the results mean. Then there is Dr Google that always thinks the worst!!

I'm here if you have anymore questions or you want to talk.

    Xx

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I can understand that it is unsettling when you receive an abnormal result in the post but try not to worry.

Cervical screening is carried out to look for abnormal changes on the cells of the cervix. It is done so these abnormal changes can be monitored or treated to prevent cancer. There is a risk that high grade abnormal changes if not treated can develop into cancer in some, but not all women. Low grade changes (as in your case) are more likely to revert (go back) to normal on their own.

The HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) is very common and at least 80% of the population who are sexually active will be exposed to this virus so you are definitely not alone.

It is the virus that is responsible for causing changes in the cells. These are not cancer and for cancer to develop if it ever does would take many years. Remember your result only showed low grade changes. When you have the colposcopy the colposcopist will be able to have a good look at the area and if necessary they may take biopsies to confirm the result.

It is normally your own immunity that gets on top of this virus but this may take a couple of years and it some cases a little bit longer.  It does help if you are not a smoker as it can sometimes take longer for your body to clear the virus. You may find it helpful to read more about the HPV on Jo's Trust website here

You may also find it helpful to read about what happens at a colposcopy clinic here

I do hope that this has helped reassure you. You are of course more then welcome to ring and speak to one of the helpline nurses if you want to go through any of this. We are here from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. Our number is 0808 800 4040.

    Best Wishes,

    Catherine

  • Hey, I am in the same situation as you. I'm also 24, went for my first smear and got exactly the same results. My stress has been even worse because I'm going travelling at the end of October but have my colposcopy on Wednesday. I'm hoping everything will be okay but I completely understand how you feel, I feel sick every time I think about it.

I'm sure we are both fine haha, and I just keep reminding myself this is why we go for screening so they can prevent it getting any worse.

  • Ahhhh this makes me feel 100x better knowing am not the only one specially been first smear test wasn't expecting it at all. Hope everything goes well for you Wednesday fingers crossed always here to chat. Be good to know how it all goes just so I can know what to expect a little more. Thank you for replying like you say am sure we're both fine! it's just the unknown isn't it haha x

  • Hello and thank you for getting back to us.

Having an abnormal cervical screening result ( your low grade dyskaryosis result) does not cause symptoms.  It might be a good idea to make a GP appointment about the discharge you are having as it could be caused by an infection for which you might need treatment for.

It is very unlikely that this will affect you having children. This would only be a possible problem for women who need to have multiple treatments to remove abnormal cervical cells. However for these women there are medical procedures that can help them to have children.

Waiting to be seen at the colposcopy clinic I know can be a worry. Please remember that it is unlikely to do you any harm waiting 6 weeks.  In the meantime if you can, try to carry on with life as normal busying yourself to try and not think about this all the time.

    Take care

    Caroline

  • I've been for my colposcopy today, it wasn't as scary as I thought and the nurse and doctor were really nice. She said if she could see any grade of abnormal cells she would take a biopsy and she said they were minor but took one biopsy which was fine.

She said hopefully I will just need a repeat smear in a year's time if all is okay with the biopsy. I hope your colposcopy goes okay, try not to worry honestly it was alright and I hate hospitals!
