Mirena at 61.

4 years ago, aged 57, I was having menopausal symptoms, hot flushes etc then started heavy bleeding. I was seen quickly, had a hysteroscopy and uterine polyps were found and removed. At the same time I had the Mirena coil inserted in combination with Estrogel for HRT. The Mirena provides the progesterone part of the HRT and was recommended to keep my uterine lining thin and prevent further polyps. This regime has worked well and I am now 61, down to half a pump of Estrogel daily and due to have the Mirena removed or replaced. I feel at 61 I am over the worst and could stop the Estrogel. But I am anxious about removing the Mirena in case the polyps/bleeding starts again. What are the chances of this? Hope someone can advise. Many thanks.

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

Unfortunately, we can't really tell you very specifically. It's going to depend on where you are in terms of menopause status. You are much less likely to bleed if you are now past the menopause transition. I'm not sure about the exact relationship between polyps formation and progesterone. The womb lining can be easily assessed by a transvaginal ultrasound. Any change that affects hormones can take around 3 months afterwards, to form a clear picture anyway.

You will have to be steered by your GP/gynaecologist on this one, as they are familiar with this scenario from other similar patients, and also will base decisions on your past history up till now.

    Best wishes,
