Now worried about long term risk of general anaesthesia

My husband is having wide local excision and sentinel lymph node biopsy in Wednesday. I was worried about risk of lymphoedema and have posted about this here also phoned our specialist nurse which made me worry less. But the other day I made the mistake of flipping through his booklet about anesthesia and the bit about risks horrified me. We hade been told he should have someone with him for 24-48 hrs after op in case he was a bit confused. I'm leaflet it said some people have long term confusion and 1 out of 4 people over 60. Never recover!!!! I don't think he's read this (he's dyslexic so doesn't read a lot of stuff). I've also googled about risks in "older brain" of getting dementia/Parkinson's after general anaesthetia. So surgeon told him chance if his cancer spreading to lymph nodes 10% but he has 25% chance of never bring the same mentally???!!! He had temporary memory problems in 2019 after being hit by car and taken to hospital with head injuries. Intend phoning specialist nurse Monday but all I can do now 4am is worry

  • I can understand your concern but I think that means 1 in 4 of "some people". If that number is say 4% (a number chosen at random) then the risk of this happening to your husband would be 1% rather than 35%.
I had similar issues with those badly worded consent leaflets about general ansesthetics when my wife had emergency brain surgery several years ago.

  • Hi,

I can understand your worry. Can I suggest that you ring the Nurse's helpline at Melanoma Focus on Monday. They will give you good advice. I have also sent you a friend request - if you accept it I can give you some further information that may be helpful. Take care and good luck to your husband with his procedure and results. melanomafocus.org/.../

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I hope by now you have managed to speak to someone from your husband's hospital team.

I'm sorry to hear your husband is undergoing surgery tomorrow and appreciate the possible risks from surgery or the anaesthesia itself can also be concerning at times like this.

Unfortunately most procedures come with a degree of risk but often these are small compared to the benefit of the treatment or surgery itself.

The risks and complications are necessary to be mentioned through the consent process but most people who do develop some confusion after surgery can be managed and will ease off with time, any long term permanent damage is rare. You can read more about this here but also do talk through the risks again with the team when you can.

I hope this helps and all goes well for your husband

    Take care

    Naomi

  • Thank you! He had his op on the 31st and he had no problems with anaesthesia and no signs (so far ) of any lymphoedema which had been another worry of mine! ️

  • Thank you, Naomi! He had his op on the 31st and all went ok, he didn't suffer any sickness, etc afte coming round and was being fed sandwiches by the time I got there to take him home We've just got to wait to get the results of the biopsy to see if it's spread to the lymph nodes.
